History of the DepartmentFaculty ProfileGallery

The Department of Bengali started functioning with the inception of the college in 2015. Since beginning the department has been offering B.A. Honours and General Programmes in Bengali, affiliated to The University of Burdwan. A number of eminent scholars have graced the department as faculty members. At present, there are three faculty members and the student intake capacity is twenty five.Five batches of studentshave successfully graduated till now.The success rate of the students in the University Examinations is nearly hundred percent in the last seven years. Apart from classroom lectures and written internal examinations, projects are assigned to the honours students to develop their skills–critical appreciation, creativity and imagination.Teachers have developed cordial relationship with the students through continuous counselling process. Further, the college library has a rich collection of Bengali books. These are of immense help not only to the students but the teachers.

The vast corpus of Bengali literature from Charjapadaand ShaktaPadabali to 19th and 20th Century prose, poetry, and novels, help widen humane qualities and finer senses through a blend of logic and emotion. It inculcates virtues of courage, tolerance, empathy and compassion needed to combat the conflict in contemporary world. It is interwoven with history, society, political and philosophy which enables students of the discipline to comprehend social life and human existenceholistically.Alongside this, literature helps nurture respect for other cultures and develops flair for comparative study of epochs and cultures.Apart from literature, Bengali as a languageis a medium ofcommunication. The department considers training in eloquence and authenticity in Bengali language speaking and writing as part of the overall thrust of the department. This is important considering the dominance of English as the mode of communication. Moreover, the department believes that a robust and dynamic training in Bengali language and literature provides access to the vibrant tradition of performing arts and aesthetics in stage, film, music, dance and so on.

To facilitate literary skillsand invigorate the sense of expression of the students, in 2022, the department inaugurated its wall magazine entitled “potroput” meaning a “vessel made of leaves”. This has literal and metaphoric significance insofar as the motto of the department is concerned. The department conceives of the wall magazine as a “vessel”, a container of literary sensibilities and expressions and the leaves are the students, the young contributors and future scholars. The department regularly organizes webinars and cultural programmes on the occasion of Bhasa Divas, RabindraJayanti, and farewell of outgoing students. Last year, the department celebrated the 250th birthday of Raja Rammohun Roy through an informative webinar. Such activitiesoffer ample opportunity to students to showcase their talents in literary and artistic ventures.
Students of the department have not only performed well in University examinations, many have joined and successfully completed regular M.A. programme in Bengali from the University of Burdwan. One hasjoined CISF in 2022 and another has assumed the position of Assistant Manager in Muthoot Finance.
